You want to make new year resolutions, but you are held back because the past years have ended with little or no difference despite all efforts? Here is an ultimate guide that will help you make a realistic and achievable new year resolution.
Plan your resolutions
If you don’t plan, you plan to fail, make a list of things you want to achieve this year.
Write down your goals
Make sure to write things down. If you don’t, chances are you will forget something. Use a good old school notebook and pencil or an app on your phone or PC. Whichever is easier for you.
Set Specific Goals
When writing down your goals be specific.
For instance, it’s not enough to want to establish a physical store for your beauty products; one has to break this goal into smaller processes like – researching the beauty market, identifying your customers, product suppliers, calculating start up cost, developing a business plan and deciding on funding plans ; all these with measurable and trackable steps.
Break big goals into smaller ones
One proven effective way to achieve your big goals is to break them into smaller goals. Whether you are planning to start driving, get married, or even improve your time management skills – the very first step is to include all these goals in your new year resolution.
How then do you break your big goals into smaller ones?
Start by putting your goals into actionable steps, i.e tasks that can be carried out immediately or at a designated time, then proceed to creating specific tasks. For example, instead of “get a driving licence” change it to: apply for provisional licence by 15th of January. Start driving lessons by 1st Feb, start studying theory by 10th Jan and so on.
Make sure each of these goals are motivating and progressive.
Be Realistic
If you have no job and no savings then creating a 6 figure business in January probably isn’t very realistic. You can get there eventually, but it will take a lot of time and planning.
It’s okay to dream big and make grand plans, but please, ensure your plans are measurable and align with your available resources.
Track your Progress
As they say, if you don’t measure it, it won’t improve. Make sure you track your progress in a way you can see clearly. This could be an app, diary etc.
Limit your Resolutions
Keep your list short, do not over extend yourself. Time and resources are limited. Focus on what is really important to you.
